Those Storytellers

Woohooo another update here, and all within the same month! I wasn't intending to write another post today but then 2 of my favorite persons in this world, my close friends Debs and Tin, were excited after seeing that I updated this blog. I'm touched (and bored, honestly) so I figured another post would be good. I still can't say for certain if my uncharacteristic consistency for the past week will last but until then, let's see just how many topics I can exhaust in my attempt to compensate for my almost 2yr long absence. Today, let's talk about how original the plots of Japanese Anime are. I am so impressed by the creativity in their concepts. I especially love how well they marry traditional beliefs and modern circumstances. They're a superb bunch of storytellers, something that I can only ever aspire to be.

Among my favorite animated movies is the Japanese film 'Your Name'. The protagonists, teenage boy Taki who's living in busy Tokyo and Mitsuha, the teenager who's tired of her slow rural life in fictional Itomori, were bound by an unexplainable yearning for someone whom they have no recollection of. They just feel an extreme loss for something that they feel they've lost although they have nothing to account for this feeling. At the beginning of the film, we see that they have been swapping bodies intermittently and without warning. Upon waking up, their memories of the day prior would seem distant, if not completely erased, just as how our dreams are usually forgotten once we've woken up. After regular occurrences of days when they couldn't recall what happened, they thought of a way to leave notes for each other to somehow have clues of what's happening to them. Soon, they have gotten to know snippets or two about each other which naturally raised their curiosity about the other. Mitsuha was the first to muster up courage to go see the other. She searched for Taki in Tokyo only to be disappointed because he didn't recognize her. They separated with Mitsuha's hair ribbon being left in the possession of Taki. The day came when Taki became aware that they've stopped swapping bodies and all the notes that Mitsuha has left in his phone have disappeared. This time, he mustered up the courage to travel to Itomori to look for her.

But what Taki found in Itomori surprised both him and  me, of course. The town was completely wiped out, as a result of a comet that hit it 3yrs ago. The catastrophe killed all of the residents in the area, including Mitsuha. It turned out that time is non-linear, as many academics have hypothesized. The lives of Mitsuha and Taki were happening simultaneously, despite the 3yr difference in their timeline. Spoiler alert: they eventually had their happy ending. Taki drank the kuchikamizake, an alcoholic drink that includes human saliva among its ingredients, which was made by Mitsuha. This action connected the two once more and fortunately, through this, they have saved the town of Itomori from its supposed extinction. Yup, I know. I have downplayed much of the plots of the film but this is my abridged version based on how I understood it. To this day, I don't know how the swapping began. Was it because Mitsuha prayed to the gods? I just know that the red ribbon symbolized the invisible string that connected them to one another, irrespective of time and place.
The film deals with various concepts that I am highly fascinated with including time, fate, and fleetingness of dreams and memories. The film was a brave attempt to explore all of these vague concepts that are individually, already difficult to comprehend, so as a whole, they're much more difficult to wrap one's mind around. I think that life has too many circumstances that cannot be explained by everyday pragmatism so when something offers us an alternative explanation, we are left wondering. Not that I don't believe that they are real. If anything, I think that when a concept offers a probable explanation, then it must be considered to be true until proven false. Anyway. I can't help but feel that somehow Taylor Swift has watched either this film or another Anime while writing her new song "Invisible String". The parallelism cannot be denied. And for that matter, my love for her new album cannot also be denied.
These photos were taken in the bustling and hustling Tokyo last May 2018. As can be seen in my several attempts to cross the busy Shibuya crossing, it is an almost impossible feat to leisurely have your photos taken of there. I am sorry to the people whom I inconvenienced with my sudden stops hahahaha This trip is among the best and most memorable travels I've been to. It's been filled with crazy antics, random dancing and singing in the public, and too much 'Oh no, why did we do that' troves of embarrassing materials that could last for years to come. It's also during this trip that I danced to the tune of Your Name's Nandemonaiya (the soundtrack of the film deserves accolades too) while in transit from Tokyo to Osaka. Crazy memories always make for the best stories.

Sentimental Man

To be fair, I'm not neglecting the blog because I'm lazy. It's just that, I've disappointingly crossed the border that divides interesting stories from sentences that are merely "a play on words without actual substance" (The quoted phrase is an idea that I've read or heard somewhere). No matter how mediocre I've been for the past years, there has to be a limit on how mediocre I can become. Haha!

Maybe it's because I've seen some classmates back in college who were automatically given a 0.0 in their term grades after being proven to have plagiarized even just a paragraph in their reports that I'm a strict observer of citation. I try my best to give credits to others whenever I use parcels of their intellectual property. If there's anything that I can be proud of in all my posts here (which to be frank is not much), it's that, I try to be as original and creative as I can. Of course let's factor in mediocrity since it's slowly getting embedded in my system. Between the two evils, I'd rather be mediocre than an intellectual thief slash pretentious know-it-all slash "how on earth can you possibly jump from senseless ranter to a keen observer?" (the quoted phrase is mine this time).

While shopping around Mong Kok, I couldn't anymore hold in the pain so I had to bully my Dad into buying me a pair of rubber shoes.

I'm not the most sentimental person out there because farewells make me as sad as the next person so although I'm in my usual enthusiastic self in the company of others, I exercise restraint. I've learned long ago that we all end up disappointing someone dear to us at some point. It's inevitable. What we can do to counter it is to choose whom we'd like to invest in. Halt, stop right there! The thought I'm trying to drive at might sound familiar but it's only because there's a disclaimer in all creative and original pursuits. Often, a single thought is expanded and rewritten into different forms or wordings causing one to assert, "it's just semantics!" but always look closer as varying possibilities lie in the details. I don't want to get too technical now since I don't have enough sound arguments in this matter and I want to continue talking about me. Hahahaha!

Anyway, it's my birthday today so cut me some slack and just pretend you've read a rather amusing entry. My brain is failing me.

Demons of Oblivion in the City of Angels

Last summer, my laptop's iTunes was on a Lana del Rey loop. This time, I find myself excessively listening to Thirty Seconds to Mars' Love Lust Faith + Dreams, Bastille's Bad Blood, and Imagine Dragons' Night Visions. I wanted to think of a witty portmanteau of my favorite singles from each album but my creative juices are failing me so I did the second best I could - come up with a title using the three.

I wanna hide the truth
I wanna shelter you
But with the beast inside
There's nowhere we can hide

When you play it hard
And I try to follow you there
It's not about control
But I turn back when I see where you go

Just a ghost running scared
Here, our dreams aren't made
They're won

We Were Skipping School and Drinking on the Job

I just returned from a very tiring weekend getaway which served as my cousin's 13th birthday celebration. We went to Zoobic Safari in Subic for a quick morning activity then drove all the way to Bataan where we slept. I'll be posting a lengthy entry about it as soon as I've gotten the photos. Anyway.

I got the title from Lana Del Rey's This is What Makes Us Girls. It was what I was listening to when I was writing down my I'm a 90s Kid entry published last month. Now let me copy-paste myself to provide a short but spot on description of the kind of best friend - relationship I have with the birthday celebrant in this post.

Almost on a weekly basis, against all odds (and by odds I mean all schedule stoppage including, but not limited to, classes and intern work), we find time to meet. If we have to cut other prior arrangements, we do just so we can spend a few hours with each other.

Her birthday coincided with my shift as an intern. Perhaps the title and the lifted paragraph would suffice in explaining why I was out on a dinner with my friends instead of fulfilling my obligations as student-intern. (Would it help if I mention I still went to the store and waited there for roughly 5 minutes for whoever picked me up that night? No? Oh. Carry on then.) Well, it was for my best friend and besides, I asked a thesismate to fill in for my position. I know which strings to pull when push comes to shove, you know! Hahaha.

Karen didn't have any plans to celebrate her 20th but because Jer and I insisted, she invited us to join her and her family as they dine in Yakimix that night. Pushy friends, if you must describe us. Arisa joined in as well. These photos were taken last 8 October 2013, by the way.

A very kind waiter took our photos but just as we were about to leave, he asked if he can have a photo with us too. We politely agreed thinking he did us a favor first anyway. The funny thing happened afterwards. The rest of the staff who were on duty then including the manager flanked us. Cute right?

Psychedelic Princess on a Magic Carpet Ride

Wouldn't it be great if we can escape from all the shackles that are hindering the realization of our visions? That at the slightest possibility of running away, we can just grab that chance and leave everything else behind? To just be the flower child some of us dream of becoming? Careless, spirited, and free. Always free.

She's a psychedelic princess
On a magic carpet ride
And where her trip will carry you
Is somewhere you can't find

She's on a plane to higher consciousness
Meditation is the key
She's got her shit together
'Cause her mind and soul are free, free!

A lot of people I personally know celebrate their birthday on 10th of May, including my best friend from elementary and my older brother. So it's impossible for that day to be uneventful for me. My family had an eat-all-you-can, or rather beef-all-you-can, dinner in Tajimaya as  per the celebrant's request. I've never eaten as much as I did that night in the entire length of summer 2013 because, well, because who in their right mind would eat like a hippopotamus and expect their bodies would not feel like exploding after? But all those grilled strips of beef, bratwursts, pork, and chicken were too delicious to pass. Especially the beef. I threw all tummy bump-warnings in the air and thought that I will not go to another eat-all-you-can affair for the remaining duration of summer as a way of making it up to my exercise-phobic body. Only to realize that I've spoken too soon. More about that on the next posts ;)

I was extra lazy to dress up that night so I've decided to continue on with my "no-heels" policy. Luckily, as I was looking for something decent to wear, I saw this flower headband which immediately came to be the "center piece" of my night. What was supposed to be a lazy dress up actually made it into my favorite list.

Escape, in whatever form, is clothed cowardice. Though it's liberating to run away or simply withdraw from our problems, in the end we weren't able to fix the main predicament. Should one day a similar issue arise, all those bottled emotions would come running straight to us, creating damages that are no longer repairable. So the issue of leaving everything behind is something that has to remain a what if. It's tempting but at the end of it all, it's impossible not to get damaged by such decision. Everything around us is our responsibility. The sooner we accept this, the easier for us to face problems head on.

These Songs of Freedom

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our mind.

I have to borrow lines from Bob Marley's Redemption Song for that perfect 'short but scarily concise' words to describe my state of mind at the moment. Besides, it's summer time here so it's but understandable to excessively listen to Bob Marley songs. Anyhoo, I attended my cousin Vince's 12th birthday party last 5th of April. Here's what I wore:

It's my finals week as we speak but I couldn't find the willpower to even reach for any of my books. I mean, the heat is enough to make me dizzy, why put another agony in the form of forcing myself to study? Right? Hahaha I'm kidding! If you were in my shoes, I would push you to study but since it's me, well I heed what my favorite song in Moulin Rouge says - come what may. Matter of fact, I just finished watching a few of my favorite movies namely Armageddon, The Day After Tomorrow  and 2012. What do you call their genre? Is it sci-fi, historical epic drama, end-of-the-world morbid scary movies or what? I don't know about you but I find these movies very entertaining. Add Pearl Harbor and Titanic (although they're both not about the apocalypse) to the growing roster and I swear you can expect me completely hooked to the tube. What I love the most about these films is the resounding knowledge that, should the last day of the Earth really dawns on us, I'd belong in the first-to-die list. I noticed that only the highly intellectual people have a shot at being saved. I'm sure somewhere out there, a group of thinkers whose ideas and visions I will never fathom are devising a strategy that gives hope to the human race. I believe a Noah's Ark is in the works. I also believe that I will not live to see that day. Only those who are extremely intelligent enough who understand why certain phenomena are happening and skillful enough to restart the human civilization will be the passengers of that saving ark. Blame my fondness of this topic on my admiration to those movies that blow my brains out :)

I love Bob Marley songs, don't you? They're the perfect feel good music for summer. Oh! I'm moving from Story Lane to another website for my paper works. Check it out HERE if you want to read some of the things I've worked on in college :)

Famous and Dumb at an Early Age

If I'd have to speak my thoughts through different songs, it would have to be from those of Lana del Ray's.

Darling, darling, doesn't have a problem
Lying to herself cause her liquor's top shelf
It's alarming honestly how charming she can be
Fooling everyone, telling them she's having fun

She says, "You don't want to be like me
Don't wanna see all the things I've seen
I'm dying, I'm dying
She says, "You don't want to get this way
Famous, and dumb at an early age
Lying, I'm lying

Or maybe it's just because I've been playing her songs on repeat for quite a few months already that I'm slowly imbibing all of them in my system, and eventually making them the songs of my life. Either that, or I'm a slightly confused girl. Haha!

My World is Changing

It's Christmas time again, yahoooo! I can't help singing along my Christmas playlist.
Where are you Christmas
 Do you remember
The one you used to know
And to start my December posts, I'll upload a few backlog pictures. Coincidentally, I was wearing red here! It seems that 2012 won't make it to my best years list but this doesn't mean that I won't look forward to Christmas. Nothing can ever dampen my Holiday spirit :) These pictures were taken last 17 November but I've only gotten my hands on these earlier this week. Let it be said that I'm a Twilight fan! I'm not denying it anymore. I don't just like the story. I love it! I've read the books before they began showing in the movies and this saga has been one of those few book to movie translations that I approved of. On top of which is Harry Potter but let's not delve into so much of that, for now. Here's what I wore for that night:

Please don't be in love with someone else

"Please don't be in love with someone else. Please don't have somebody waiting on you."

For weeks now, Taylor Swift's Enchanted keeps on playing in my head. As of the time being, this is my favorite among all of her self-written songs. As soon as I've heard it, I was enchanted. And here's the twist: Adam Young of the Owl City was the inspiration of the song. The moment he was able to put two and two together, he thanked Taylor through what he says is the most eloquent form of communication. Thus Owl City's Enchated was born.

Confession time: these are in Size 7. I'm size 5. Wonder why I still bought them? Simple. I just had to! I know you'll understand :)

I was just too excited to try on these new platforms that I've recently bought. So though I just had to accompany my little cousin in trying one ride to another, I didn't hesitate wearing them.

If only I could wish

Every time I watch this part, yes particularly this part of the movie, I can't help but feel all those warm knee-weakening feelings. Not because I get so overwhelmed by how these iconic girls live their lives but because I couldn't help but wish that I'll be experiencing the same liberating adventures in the future. And just look at what they're wearing!!! Am I seeing lighted bulbs in your minds, like what is popping in mine? :P

P.S. I would also like to thank my best friend, Karen Soledad, for the wonderful pasalubongs from H&M :">

P.S. #2. Jamaica Cabido is back from Japan! Thank you for the impromptu treat awhile ago. My tummy's in its thumb's up form. (the impromptu treat became somewhat like a cheering meeting, my cheerdancers were there - Annjo Visperas, Emr Hernandez. Even Cheska Tantoco)
